The seed of inspiration behind AA was born in Oaxaca, southern Mexico more than 12 years ago. People who visited us when we lived there used to say that life there was somehow more intense, more real. Now, with the perspective of time and distance, I sincerely believe that it’s true. I can’t explain it rationally, but I think people in Mexico value the good things life has to offer on a different scale. When weighing up the pros and cons of life, they often seem to forget to put the cons in the balance, giving them an incredibly positive and joyful approach to life, and even death.
Mexico is a vast country and we specialise in the south, where colonial and pre-colonial cultures blend in a colourful explosion. Hundreds of Mayan, Toltec, Mixtec and Zapotec ruins can be found spread over Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz, Tabasco and the Yucatan peninsula, while many wonderfully preserved colonial towns and cities bring modern-day rhythm to the heart of this land.

Oaxaca City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a paradise for the senses. Experience the lively yet relaxed way of life of the local Oaxacans, enjoying a Mezcal on the ‘Zocalo’ the main plaza or exploring the local markets. Or, head to one of the mountain villages and enjoy an authentic plate of tortillas, chilli and frijoles with the locals. Witness one of the most beautiful celebrations in Latin America – 'The Day of the Dead' – with its parades, altars and cemeteries open all night, packed with flowers, candles and music. There is also the Gelagetza Summer Festival, where people from all regions gather to show off their local folklore and dances.

Still unspoiled, the landscapes here are a wonderfully kept secret for trekkers or bikers: the cloud forest in Oaxaca’s Sierra Norte Mountains and in Chiapas are pristine but accessible; the coasts are wild but offer all levels of comfort; and the villages and their people are always open to visitors. You can raft, dive, ride, trek, bike or simply take time out and relax.
AA knows southern Mexico inside out. We have a very special link with this land and we want to show you why.
